StarsCanada Tree Nut Products and Services
What Canada Tree Nut Products and Services could I make in my home or apartment, for home or sale?
From the home-based business perspective, Canada is now home to more kinds of tree nuts species and cultivars than you might imagine. Some are native; others are naturalized or exotic. However, there are not many individuals growing of most kinds. Seeing that many more are planted in the future would certainly be worth while for all of us.

Which of these tree nuts grow near where you live? If you live in southern Canada, many of them will grow near you, and may already be doing so, both intown and out. Beaked hazel reach farthest north, to the boreal forest. If you live in the north, get your southly friends to gather and bring you nuts.

Some tree nuts can do truly surprising things. Cobjon Nutcultures Services says three 'crops' per year are possible from the living trees of several of the species of the walnut family, without harm to the tree. Consider the black and the white walnut and the hickories. Here are their three crops:

  • In the spring, the sap flows, from which extraordinary walnut and hickory syrups and sugars can be made.

  • In the early summer, reachable immature walnut and hickory nuts can be picked for surprisingly good pickles, condiments and confections.

  • And for all the tree nuts, not just the walnuts and hickories, in the autumn, mature nut crops are gathered from the ground as they fall from the trees (or shrubs per the hazel), starting in late August, and continuing through September and October, and even into November for the ginkgoes. Note: nuts are not picked off the tree. So, no climbing or special equipment is required. So its doesn't matter that the trees are tall and huge. In fact, the bigger the better, because bigger trees produce even more sap, nuts, leaves (and more shade, too). In some cases the harvested mature nuts must be processed to separate the husk from the stone. The cap (oaks), husk (mostly walnuts and hickories), the shell (all but specially the walnuts) and the kernel (all) can all be made into a variety of marvelous and innovative products.
Here are some of the kinds of tree nuts now growing in Canada, many intown and out:

The list will grow as the other kinds of Canada tree nuts uses are examined. (Medicinal uses have been omitted until their individual safety and efficacy can be ascertained.)

Many of these are possible even for the apartment dweller. Most are possible for the home-dweller, especially if there is a home workshop handy.
